Search for yourself online
Do you really know what is out there about you?
More than one billion people searches are carried out on Google every day.
92% of employers will conduct an online search for your name during their hiring process.
With stats like those, it’s not surprising that it is so easy today to miss out on a potential opportunity because of something negative discovered about you online.
So it is essential to regularly conduct an online search of your name to find out exactly what is out there. Once you know what is there, then you can take action to fix it if need be.
Social Check Recommends:
1. Don’t be invisible online
Don’t try to remove yourself completely from the online world. The idea is to be found when someone searches your name. By having no online presence at all it is easy for people to say no to meeting you or people may question how adaptive to change you are, how comfortable you are with technology, or whether you can build and maintain business and social networks. We are not saying you have to be on social media but we believe society has reached a tipping point where if you are not on social media it may lead people to wonder why.
2. Set up a 'Google Alert' for your name
Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your queries. Enter a search query you wish to monitor. You will see a preview of the type of results you'll receive. You can manage your alerts from your 'Google Alert' management page. It contains all currently active alerts, and provides you with a way to edit the settings for each individual alert.
3. Type your name into a search engine
Know what is currently publicly visible about you by searching your name online. Ensure that you check the web section as well as images, because you never know what may be hiding there. You may find accounts that you no longer use or things that are personal. Note down those things that need to be addressed immediately and those that should be monitored.
4. Work out what should be online but isn't
In order to build a positive and professional online presence there are certain platforms to consider being present on. Here are some examples:
