The power of pictures
With over 400 million active monthly users, Instagram has rapidly become a platform that should be a part of every personal branding strategy.
As an image based social network, it offers opportunities for you to build and market your brand in a way that other networks don’t. Every photo you post is saying something about you, your interests, and your values.
Also, as Instagram is highly rated by Google, it is a powerful way to own more of the real estate on the first page of search returns around your name.
Social Check Recommends:
1. Be clear on your objectives
It is important to be clear in your own mind what image and qualities you are looking to portray through your photographs.
What professional qualities or skills are you looking to demonstrate? For example, you might be sharing images of yourself attending or presenting at industry events or with major clients. Industry events and conferences are a great one as they show you are actively involved in your industry. If you work in a creative industry, Instagram can be a powerful way to share your portfolio of work.
What personal qualities and aspects of your life outside work are you also looking to demonstrate? You might have a passion for the outdoors or travel or food. You may or may not wish to share images of your family. These sorts of images humanize you, and help employers / customers / business partners etc getting a better sense of who you really are and why they should do business with you.
2. Take the time to write a winning profile
On your Instagram account, you can add a photo, full name, brief bio, and website URL, all of which are visible to the public. Make sure you take the time to ensure that these are all furthering your personal brand.
For the photo, use a good quality, close-up headshot. For the sake of consistent branding and ease of recognition, we recommend using the same shot that you have on your other social media platforms.
With your name, make sure you use for your full name, so that people know it is actually you. Ideally, your Instagram name will be the same as your Twitter handle.
For the URL, you can use your personal website. This directs people to the site so that they can learn more about you if they like the images. Just another reason why you absolutely should have your own personal website.
Don’t forget to add a bio. This is your chance to explain briefly who you are, what you do, and why you are unique. It is worth testing various versions of this. Ask your friends and colleagues if they think that you have captured your essence in a powerful way.
3. Use both photos and short videos
Video is such a powerful way to convey your message. It doesn’t have to be a Hollywood production. Using your mobile phone to shoot the footage is fine.
Just make sure to make it fun, engaging, and authentic.
4. Use powerful hashtags
Whenever you post an image, you have the option of adding relevant hashtags (i.e. #keyword) to describe the picture or video.
Make sure you always add these and give some careful thought to the most relevant and attention-grabbing hashtags to make sure people are able to find your content.
5. Expand your network by interacting with other Instagrammers
The simplest and fastest way to build your Intagram network, is to interact and engage with other Instagrammers.
You can do this by commenting on and liking other people’s pictures and videos and by following Instagrammers in your industry or those you think are influential or important.
Make a commitment to spend a dedicated time each week interacting with other Instagrammers and then ensure that you maintain this discipline. It will pay handsome dividends.
6. Cross promote content on your other social media platforms
You can exploit Instagram to promote other content you have produced such blog content on your personal website.
For example, you can create a graphic of your blog for Instagram using a simple and free graphic design site like www.canva.com. Then you can simply upload the image to Instagram with a quick summary and link to your blog or other content in caption accompanying the image.
You can also easily share your Instagram posts on Facebook and Twitter.
