Make your date of birth private
Protect your identity and avoid discrimination
Handle your personal information as you would your bank details – don’t leave it lying around for thieves to get their hands on.
Leaving yourself exposed online could lead to identity theft, discrimination and even impersonation. In a worse case scenario, this could result in others getting access to your bank account, credit cards, and even loans being taken out in your name.

Social Check Recommends:
1. Conceal your date of birth
Make your birth date across all of your social media platforms only visible only to friends and family online. To remind people it is your birthday you can simply use a day and month and make the year private.
2. Consider the risks
The occurrence of identity fraud is increasing globally. Given that our birthdate is used frequently to identify us, we need to question whether we should be displaying it openly online for the world to see.
According to the US Federal Trade commission about 1 in 30 people experience some form of identity fraud each year which equates to about 10 million individuals. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Personal Fraud Survey for 2010-11, Australians lost $1.4 billion due to personal fraud.
More alarmingly, the survey estimated a total of 1.2 million Australians aged 15 years and over were victim of at least one incident of identity fraud in the 12 months prior to the survey interview.
3. You have options to minimise your exposure
We suggest not making your birthdate public and only providing your birthdate on platforms if it is absolutely required.
