Build your influence on Twitter
20 ways to grow your number of Twitter followers
There is no point posting great content on Twitter if no one is reading it or interacting with it.
Having a larger number of Twitter followers isn't about ego (although it definitely feels nice), it is about getting your message out to the widest possible audience and building the community of people that you engage with.
So here are our 20 ways to rapidly grow your number of Twitter followers...
Social Check Recommends:
1. 1. Tweet content that is relevant, helpful, and interesting…and do it regularly.
Nothing ground breaking there but this must be your mantra. Start with this in mind, do this diligently, and we guarantee that your number of followers and retweets will grow steadily.
2. 2. Make sure your bio is complete and presents you in the most compelling way possible.
People coming to your twitter page for the first time will read your bio and if it doesn’t grab them, there is little chance of them following you. When you are writing your bio, keep in mind that it is really a sales pitch to potential followers. Also, don’t forget to use relevant keywords in your bio, as this will ensure that you rank in twitter search.
3. 3. Make sure you are using relevant hashtags in your tweets.
Studies have shown that posts with hashtags typically see twice the level of engagement. Hashtags also help bring potential new followers to your page, as when people search for specific terms, your posts will be displayed.
4. 4. Don’t be afraid to directly ask your followers to retweet a post.
Studies have shown that when you ask explicitly, posts are retweeted four times as often. Every time a post of yours is retweeted by a follower, you are growing your sphere of influence and likely to be growing your followers.
5. 5. Include images with your tweets.
Research suggests that tweets with images receive 18% more engagement than those without. A picture says a thousand words, which is helpful when you can only use 140 characters.
6. 6. Use links in your tweets.
Tweets with links get more retweets than those without. Often 140 characters isn’t enough to tell the whole story. Make sure your followers are able to easily find the full story.
7. 7. Upload your email contacts to twitter.
One way to rapidly grow your follower base is to let all your contacts know that you are on twitter by uploading your email contacts. Given that you already have a relationship with these people, there is a good chance of them following you.
8. 8. Follow more people.
Studies have shown a correlation between the number of people followed and the number of followers. But don’t just follow people at random. Find people who share your interests or who are in the same industry or field.
9. 9. Get smart about scheduling your tweets.
Use a tool like Hootsuite, that will let you schedule a regular flow of tweets without having to post each tweet manually. Hootsuite will also let you use the same content across all your social media platforms, maximising your exposure and impact, while minimising the time it takes you.
10. 10. Retweet other people’s posts regularly.
This is all about good karma. People like to know that you are paying attention to what they are posting and think it is worthy of retweeting. They will return the favour and grow your followers in the process.
11. 11. Promote your Twitter account everywhere!
Include your twitter handle on your business card, your personal website, in the footer to your emails, on your blog etc. Adding a “follow button” to your website or blog makes it as easy as possible for people to follow you. Also make sure you promote your twitter account on all your other social media accounts. Finally, think how you can also promote your twitter account in the “real world”. For example, you might be giving a presentation and can include your twitter handle on the last slide along with your contact details.
12. 12. Don’t just sell, sell, sell.
People are far more likely to follow you and engage with your tweets if they find them helpful and interesting, and also if they feel that you are helping them grow their own networks and connections. Twitter isn’t a one-way, hard sell. You want to build a reputation as someone who helps your followers and builds a valuable and supportive community.
13. 13. Mention other users in your tweets.
When you are replying to or referencing other users, make sure you use the nomenclature @theirname. People are far more likely to engage with you and your tweets when you use their name.
14. 14. Carefully select a particularly powerful tweet to “pin” to the top of your stream.
Given that this will be the very first tweet of yours that a potential new follower will see, make sure it is attention grabbing and compelling. By “pinning” the tweet to the top of your stream, you stop it being replaced by new tweets which might be less enthralling.
15. 15. If you are asked a question, always reply.
It’s not just being polite, it shows that you actually read the posts of your followers and value interaction with them. Followers aren’t just a number, they are real people, with the basic human emotions and needs.
16. 16. Successful tweets aren’t one hit wonders.
It is perfectly acceptable…indeed advisable….to tweet the same content multiple times. Research has shown that the average lifespan of a tweet is around 18 minutes. Given that only a small percentage of your followers are likely to be actively viewing twitter during any 18-minute window, retweeting the same content ensures exposure to more of your followers.
17. 17. The world doesn’t revolve around you.
Sorry to break this to you but it is important that your tweets aren’t too self-involved. Studies have shown that tweets that include self-references are far less likely to be retweeted or engaged with. So go easy on those constant updates about your mood and esoteric worldviews.
18. 18. Find and follow your LinkedIn connections on Twitter.
LinkedIn has made it easy to find and then follow your LinkedIn connections on twitter. This is not only a great way to ensure that you keep up with content from your network, but it is also likely to lead to most of these LinkedIn connections following you straight back. You can find instructions on how to do this here.
19. 19. Learn from the masters.
It is worth following the top twitter users in your particular space or industry and then watching what they tweet and how they interact with their audience. You will very quickly get a sense of what works best. And while you are watching this, you will also be finding great opportunities to retweet their best posts to your own followers.
20. 20. Don’t buy followers.
There are lots of companies out there offering to sell you followers and it can be really tempting to do this. But resist the temptation. These followers won’t add any real value to your network or opportunities and it can make your account look very strange when you seem to have lots of Russian followers. There is also a risk of twitter actually suspending your account.
