8 Steps to a Successful Career

There are eight simple steps that once mastered will help you achieve the success that you deserve. These can be applied to any industry, field, occupation and career level.

1. Get to know yourself

It is very difficult to achieve success if you don’t know yourself. We all have something that makes us unique, whether it’s skills, interests or values etc. Once you discover the things that make you, tick, your future outcomes will become clearer and you will be able to achieve the success that you desire.

2. Build your professional network and engage with industry leaders

Engage with industry leaders and role models that you can learn from, and take advice from. It’s very difficult to find success alone, with little support. This support will ensure that you stay on track and will assist in pushing you to the next level.

3. Keep to your strengths and identify your weaknesses

Find your key strengths, the skills you enjoy using to the fore. Successful individuals use the talents that come naturally to them, that ultimately deliver long term career success.

4. Push the boundary

If something isn’t quite working as you would like, using your current methods, don’t be afraid to try something new! Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Most successful individuals don’t play it safe, and you may find doing things differently will steer you to a different perspective, which will lead to great success!

5. Complete a ‘career forecast’ and set short and long term goals

Finding success doesn’t come easy, nor does it happen overnight. Success requires long hours, sleepless nights, and most importantly hard work, commitment and determination. It is also essential that you work to a time line, set yourself some realistic goals, both short and long term, and stick to them as best as you can. They should be specific and measurable, to ensure that you can track your journey.

6. Help others

During the path to success, it’s important to remember the people that helped you get there, and think about others who are only at the start of their journey. Giving back is such an important component of a successful figure. Whether it’s becoming a mentor, taking on an intern, answering questions related to your area of expertise on online forums, the path you choose to take will give you purpose, and something to be proud of later down the track.

7. Build your personal brand

Now more than ever, with the prevalence of the online world, its important to not only brand yourself but communicate your thoughts and talents in an effective way. Failing to build your online presence may put a halt to you reaching success. No one knows you better than yourself, and there are tools out there that can give you an idea of what you currently look like online and give you tips on how to build a strong online brand (www.socialcheck.com). Be your own brand ambassador and take action sooner rather than later.

8. Have a healthy balance of work and life

Heard of the saying, ‘Everything in moderation’, this does not just apply to food, but applies to life. It’s very easy to sacrifice everything to achieve our dreams, this behaviour however is what leads to a mid life crisis.  You need to be able to find a balance between work and your personal life, otherwise success may be hard to hold on to, long term.

When you do become successful, never stop completing the steps above. The moment you do, you could find yourself back where you started. Just because you reached success doesn't mean you will remain successful. Keep evaluating your values, methods and practices, continue building your network and engaging with others, constantly evaluate and identify your strengths and weaknesses, continue to push the boundary, help others, build your brand and ensure you have that balance between your professional and personal life. With ongoing persistance and determination comes long term success.
