4 Ways To Make The Most of Your First Job

 

Graduates, have you just landed your first job? Want to make sure that you make the most out of it? Here are 4 tips to ensure that you do!

1.  Don’t be nervous – Be Confident

Accept that the learning process involves making mistakes and growing from them. Perfection doesn’t exist. You need to be confident and that comes from trial and error and hard work. A great way to mark your progress is to set out small goals and tick them off as they are accomplished.

2.  Get out of your comfort zone

 The fact is that you learn more about yourself and grow more as a person when you push yourself to the limit and are outside your comfort zone. Don’t hide behind your desk, ask questions, speak your mind and share your views (at the right time). 



3. Learn to handle criticism

Criticism is something that you will just have to learn to accept. It won’t always be warranted, but embrace it, grow a ‘thick skin’ and learn from it. Constructive criticism will help you get to where you want to be.

4. Put yourself first

When you are in your first job it can be easy for it to come before everything else. Ensure that you put yourself first, have a life outside of work. This can include friendships, hobbies, family time etc. To do this ensure that you manage your time at work effectively so that you complete work activities during the day. Secondly set boundaries from the get-go so false expectations are not set (e.g. taking business calls on your day off) and finally remember it is ok to say ‘no’ when boundaries have been overstepped.
