4 Reasons to Review Your Online Presence

 

Before going to a job interview, you normally do your best to look presentable. If you’re a female, you’ll put on some makeup, check that your hair is tidy, and dress well; if you’re a male, you’ll shave, put on a nice shirt, and maybe a tie too.

So, why don’t we do this to our online profiles? Most of the stuff on our online profiles is probably the real life equivalent of showing up to a job interview late, with dirty and smell clothes, messy hair, and bad breath.

It’s a good idea to check your online profiles before applying for a job. If you’re not convinced yet, here are four more reasons why you should do so:

 

1. You only get one chance to make a first impression

First impressions are now being made online, and you only get once chance to make them. There’s no second chance, so make sure your social media profile leaves a great first impression. Wow them with the content on your profile.

 

2. There are consequences

Just like in real life, your actions on social media have consequences. For example, that nasty post about your ex-boss may help you let off some steam, but it could potentially stop you from being hired by a new boss. So, think before you post.

 

3. Your online profiles contribute to your personal brand

Develop your online identity, and use social media to build your personal brand. Ensure that the content on your profiles reinforces the brand that you want to communicate to others. Are you a graphic designer? Showcase some of your work online, and link to great works that inspire you.  

 

4. Your profile may not be as private as you think

Yes, yes, you’ve already checked your privacy settings a few years ago and changed them. But did you know that social media sites are always changing their privacy settings? It’s a bit of a hassle, but it might be worth checking them again, especially if you haven’t checked them for a while.

 

Don’t let the mistakes on your online profiles stop you from getting that job. Leave a great first impression, and maximise your opportunities.
